Additional Old Movies to see

I was looking through the VHS/DVD cabinet and came on a couple of other old films definitely worth seeing.

The Best Years of Our Lives (late 1940's):  This film tells the story of 3 soldiers who meet on the flight home and their experiences reestablishing their lives after the war.  The film stars Frederic March, Myrna Loy, Dana Andrews and Harold Russell (a real veteran who lost both hands in the war).  Russell won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and March won the Best Actor Oscar.  There is a scene in which March enters the apartment and surprises his wife.  It is beautifully under played and wonderful to watch.

Since You Went Away (early 1940's):  This film is from Selznick International and stars Claudette Colbert, Joseph Cotten, Jennifer Jones, Robert Walker Sr., Monty Wooley, Shirley Temple, and Hattie McDaniel.  The story follows a family when the husband/father goes off to war and then is missing.  It is a wonderful "homefront" film.  Supporting players include Agnes Moorehead and Ali Nazimova.  It is just a wonderful film.

The Magnificent Ambersons (early 1940's): Orson Wells made this film based on the Booth Tarkington book.  It stars all his Mercury Theater actors including Joseph Cotton and Agnes Moorehead.  It is very well done.

Did Joseph Cotton ever give a bad performance?  He's another of the army of fine actors who never received credit.
