Religious Right

The religious right is gaining ground in this country and I am getting scared.  Jeb Bush thinks that single mom's should be publicly shamed.  He didn't say how but maybe wearing a Scarlet Letter?  The legislatures in Michigan and North Carolina passed bills that allow people to deny marriage licenses on the basis of their own religious beliefs.  That means in NC if one is opposed to gay or interracial marriages, one can deny a marriage license to the couple.  The person just has to claim that it is their religious belief!  Legislators who opposed this bill realize that the law will be overturned in the courts after years of legal fighting.  Make work for lawyers.
Lindsay Graham wants to nationally ban abortions.  That will take up time in  the Senate and probably never pass.  Obama will not sign it and they don't have the votes for an override.  Just taking up time and space.
A legislator in Montana who will probably run for governor next time uses the Bible as his source of thought.  He said that there is no mention of retirement in the Bible and therefore no need for social security.  After all, Noah built the ark at age 600 and lived to be 900.  He never retired.  Of course this man is a millionaire and has no financial worries.
Then there was the one in Arizona who thought requiring everyone to go to church on Sunday was a way to increase morality.  She had no concept that for some people the Sabbath is Friday and for another group it is Saturday.  Only Christians observe Sunday.  Nor does she understand that one cannot require a Jewish, Muslin, Hindu, or Buddhist person to attend a Christian service on Sunday.
Of course there are legislators who want creationism taught in the schools either along with or instead of evolution.  After all the world in 6000 years old and Noah brought dinosaurs onto the ark along with all the other animals.  Their opinion is as valid as all the scientific research of the past 150 years.   Does anyone wonder why America is failing behind the rest of the world in education, scientific research, etc.?  Don't forget that Anton Scalia is a creationist, too.  How he got on the Supreme Court bench is mind boggling.
These are just small examples of the opinions of the religious right.  They have also blocked adoption by LBGT people in Michigan.  The Chief Justice in Alabama believes not only in nullification but openly advocates ignoring rulings by the SCOTUS.  Simple questioning on campuses in the south reveal that college students know little or nothing about the War Between the States, including who fought, who won and what it was about.  After all, the south will rise again and we can forget that bad period in history.  I am just more scared that ever about the future of this country.
