Senator Marco Rubio, in his speech ending his campaign, said
that America is a Judeo-Christian country.
I have been thinking about that remark ever since and his comment
bothers me.
I don’t understand now a United States Senator who is
running for President of the United States thinks that America is a
Judeo-Christian country. Is Florida, his
home state, so monolithic in population?
Has he never traveled to Manhattan, Chicago, Honolulu, San Francisco or
Los Angeles, Minnesota, or Texas? If he
walked up Seventh Avenue in Manhattan from Penn Station to Columbus Circle, he
would quickly hear dozens of languages from people of every skin color in the
world. That trip alone should convince
him that there are a lot of people who are neither Jewish nor Christian. If he took New Jersey Transit he might find
himself the only Caucasian in the car.
He should travel to Minnesota to meet the large group of Sudanese
refugees there. If he went to Texas, he
would not only meet the millions of Hispanic citizens, he would meet the large
group of Viet-Namese refugees who settled there. On the West Coast and in Hawaii, he would
encounter millions of Japanese and Chinese Americans. The Japanese American family could tell him
about the terrible way they were treated during World War II by Christian
America.America has thousands of Hindi, Muslim, Shinto, Buddhist, and every other religion in the world. Our people come from just about every country as well. America is no longer a Judeo-Christian country, if it ever was. During and after World War II, the white Anglo-Saxon Protestant citizens did everything they could to limit the number of Jewish refugees admitted to America to escape almost sure death in the Nazi concentration camps. Meanwhile anti -Semitism was rampant in America. I do not think that qualifies America as a “Judeo-Christian” nation.
